5 things we’ve already learned from Saints’ training camp

We’ve only been to the New Orleans Saints training camp for a few days, and there’s so much to talk about that we’ve seen. Although it looks completely different than before, it could still provide some nice gems and action. Here are just a few things we have already learned from the early stages of practice.

1. It feels great to see some football back

Only football highlights and reports to see every day were excellent. It’s a welcome distraction with everything that happens. If you haven’t watched some of the training camp action, head over to Saints News Network on YouTube to see some daily highlights, all of which this week’s video was courtesy of FOX 8’s Edwin Goode. Saints on a daily basis speaking again has been great for everyone. It’s just a shame that fans probably won’t be able to attend the team’s first four games this season.

2. The defense looks good

Four straight practices went in favor of the defense, and the good news is that the fool’s gold is not like those days in 2014 and 2015. Players recovering from injuries like Marcus Davenport, Alex Anzalone, and Sheldon Rankins are praised by the coaching staff. Seeing the defense starting strong from the gate is always a good sign, especially with some new faces. In particular what Demario Davis said about Malcolm Jenkins on Wednesday is what this recalls.

“It’s been great his leadership and his experience in the field,” Davis said.

“You can just tell from some of the conversations we can have, to plays, about what we saw and (can) see things the same way. So if you have guys who have experience, do it does not matter if they came from other teams, they have seen so much from the same set, the same formation, the same kind of plays, and know how the game looks from a standpoint point of view, or you know, look at that white , some of the different formations, inclinations, concepts and just the notion that you can have the kind of conversations that you do not necessarily have with young boys right off the bat. “

3. Having quality depth is underrated

Andrus Peat is one of the unfortunate injuries reported from the camp because he is dealing with a broken thumb. He visibly lost weight, and has another commitment on his hands. Although he should be ready for Week 1 of the season, it’s good to know that the Saints still have some really solid backup plans. Nick Easton is set to run with the first team, and good options like he has on the final roster will be imperative this season. The crime has not yet fully found its groove, but it is only a matter of time.

4. Jameis Winston is really a free agency

Jameis Winston slept a good bit in the offseason with a vegan diet and helped his vision out by getting LASIK. He took a minimal deal to learn from the Saints quarterback room, and it’s been fun all so far. Sean Payton has been pleased with Winston’s progress, saying he’s officially picking up Saints’ rap and loves his attitude and work ethic. He made something real nice throw in camp, and if he can keep going, it will make the future really interesting.

5. Rookies and veterans who provide intrigue

Another punter on the roster seemed absurd if you had Thomas Morstead on the roster, but Blake Gillikin is one of the many players the Saints have found that made an early impression. When you think about what someone like Gillikin might bring to the table as a punter and kicker and the potential threat of COVID-19, it does not sound too far-fetched to see someone like him come to the training team. a pinch. He is definitely not the only rookie who is impressive early on, but one of many besides the concept class of the team that is worth calling out.

Meanwhile, veterans like Ty Montgomery and Bennie Fowler have stepped on the plate. It’s not uncommon to see this happen, and they are not the only ones worth calling out, but when you start hearing from players like Fowler, you see how crazy things can come together for a team. On Wednesday, he revealed that he was with Emmanuel Sanders during the workout in June with Drew Brees, and what he said during his interview about that experience was impressive.

“I just wanted to have a chance to prevent Drew (Brees),” Fowler said.

“Emmanuel (Sanders) invited me so I decided to go out and do a few laps in. He asked me if I was on a team and I was, ‘No, I’m not on a team right now because of COVID. I have had no chance to work out with anyone or travel to teams. ‘And he was like,’ I’ll call our boys right now. ‘ I was fine, okay, we’ll see. Then my agent called me maybe a day or two later and said, ‘hey, Drew really mentioned about you and whatever you did, you really have to impress him.’ To come for a Quarterback for Hall of Fame, even just to get passes from him, if nothing came out, I learned a lot from him and I’m glad it came here, where they stood out to me and drew me They just said, ‘when training camp starts, we’ll take you to a training camp.’ And she just ended up signing with me because Drew is so hard on me. “

We will be able to take a training camp for a while without action for preseason, but this new week may be affected by two introducing tropical systems driving to Louisiana.
