CONNECTICUT: An antibody survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that about 5.2 percent of the state’s population had been infected with the coronavirus in late May. That equates to about 185,000 potential cases in Connecticut, which is more than four times the number of positive cases identified at the time.
For Connecticut, the CDC confidence range for residents infected with the virus at some point is between 3.8 and 6.6 percent.
CDC partnered with commercial testing laboratories to estimate infection levels for four complete states and a handful of large cities. According to the CDC, about 23 percent of New York City residents have antibodies against the virus in late May.
The survey was the second of its kind from the CDC. The first round of study also included Connecticut; She estimated an overall infection rate of 4.9 percent as of May 3.
Connecticut’s second round of polling was conducted May 21-26. It included people who had blood samples taken for reasons other than COVID-19, including routine medical visits. A total of 1,800 samples were collected from Connecticut.
The survey found that about 5.8 percent of women and 4.6 percent of men in Connecticut were infected.
The CDC notes that the survey comes with some caveats. It is not a truly random survey, as it is based on people whose blood was taken for routine examinations or sick visits, which may not reflect the general population.
The results reported by the CDC are adjusted for false positive and false negative results; They also point out that it is possible that antibody levels decrease over time and that people who previously tested positive for the presence of antibodies may eventually test negative.
The CDC also caution that the survey should not be interpreted as meaning that people who tested positive for antibodies are immune to the virus. It is still unknown for how long the antibodies last and what level of protection they give people.
