The Chicago Bears certainly had a memorable practice Wednesday at training camp, where there were a few pleasant surprises combined with a shocking fear of running David Montgomery suffering what was believed to be a reading strain at a handoff in the practice.
There were many storylines to watch from her latest padded practice, including a quarterback who took the lead, a designed rookie who shines and some injury updates for some big name starters.
Here are five takeaways from Wednesday’s padded practice:
Bears have no excuse for not having an emergency plan when returning
The Bears escaped a bullet with the return of David Montgomery on Wednesday. After reports that feared Montgomery the least, Matt Nagy said the Bears believe it is a reading strain for Montgomery. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than anything else. How long Montgomery is out will remain to be seen, but this has made an already big problem even clearer.
Chicago has no depth behind Montgomery on their depth map. Tarik Cohen is not a back three, and inexperienced players Ryan Nall and Artavis Pierce are following behind Montgomery. This depth concern is nothing new, which is why calls for an add-on with free agents have been loud at times. Nagy has talked about this the year of the emergency plan. And the Bears have better one in place regarding insurance for Montgomery.
