That was short life. Sports Illustrated’s Grant Cohn – not too long ago today – reported that the San Francisco 49ers were on top of a six-year, $ 94.8 million contract extension for All-Pro tight end George Kittle.
Do not just celebrate.
Kittle himself responded via Twitter and asked, “You believe everything you read on the internet, huh?”
Por favor.
Cohn’s report stated that the 49ers would announce the new deal on Friday. It sounds like this is news for Kittle, or it could be that the details just aren’t finalized. We will find out in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that his sources indicate that there is “healthier progress” towards a new deal between the two sides, but that nothing has been agreed yet.
“The sides have not reached an agreement. League sources indicated Wednesday to NBC Sports Bay Area,” Maiocco wrote, “but they appear to be ‘making healthier progress’ following a deal that Kittle is expected to make the highest paid tight end in the NFL by a wide margin. “
Mike Silver of NFL Network also reports that there has been progress in the negotiations. Silver apparently received his information from Kittle’s agent, Jack Bechta.
In reference to the @grantcohn report: I’m told the 49ers and George Kittle are ‘making progress’ on a lucrative contract extension … which means the 🐛 emoji may be outdated. He is by far the highest paid TE in league history.

In Cohn’s defense, he began his report with “Take this for what it’s worth,” before offering important contract details.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said last week that general manager John Lynch has worked hard to get a deal done with Kittle.
“I know right now, as we talk, every day, I know John’s upstairs talking his ass off with Kittle’s agent,” Shanahan said, “and those two are trying to work it out.”

NFL Network’s Mike Silver today delivered an update on the contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and their All-Pro tight end, George Kittle. Head coach Kyle Shanahan noted last week that general manager John Lynch has worked impressively to get a long-term job done. Kittle enters the final year of his rookie contract. “I know at the moment, as we talk, every day, I know John’s working up his ass and talking to Kittle’s agent, and those two are trying to work it out,” Shanahan said. It does not sound like too much progress has been made, according to Silver. “I spoke to Kittle’s agent, Jack Bechta, yesterday.”
