4 more deaths, 456 new cases in Orange County as of June 29 – Orange County Register

Update: The county has explained why test totals on its new dashboard were lower on Friday than in the Thursday report. The new panel only reports the total number of diagnostic tests that have been performed to date. Before Friday, the cumulative tests also included serology (antibody) tests performed. To be in line with how the state reports the cumulative number of tests, the county agency now only reports diagnostic tests.

A serology (antibody) test does not tell a person if they are currently infected. It only tells a person if they have had a new coronavirus infection.

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported four new deaths as of Monday, June 29, increasing the total number of people who have died from the coronavirus to 330 in the county. Of the 330 deaths, 171 were included as people in skilled nursing facilities and three as homeless people.

There were 456 new cases of the virus confirmed on Monday. The cumulative total of cases is now 13,064 since testing began in March. The seven-day average for the reported daily cases was 341, which dates from June 22.

According to the California Department of Health, there have been 105 deaths in Orange County in the past 14 days.

The state agency reports 595 hospitalized patients in the past 14 days (suspicious and positive) at 33 hospitals across the county as of Saturday. The state’s coronavirus dashboard also shows that Orange County has at least 41% of its ICU beds still available.

The county estimates the number of recoveries from the virus was 7,193 as of Monday. Recoveries are based on the cumulative case count of the previous 28 days.

The state dashboard also showed that 69,529 tests have been reported in the past 14 days with a positive test rate of 6.4%.

The total county-wide cumulative evidence reported Monday was 223,623, with data as of June 27.

County data shows that 17% of all cases are over age 65, the same age group accounting for 75% of deaths.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 31% (103)
  • 75-84: 27% (88)
  • 65-74: 17% (58)
