4 alcohol licenses suspended for COVID-19 violations

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Licensed alcoholic beverages from four establishments were suspended by the state on Tuesday for violating rules aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19.

The Department of Business and Professional Regulation announced the emergency shutdowns of licenses for Pegasus Lounge & Package in Tampa, Mathers, Shots and Joysticks in Orlando, Rusty’s Raw Bar and Grill in Lee County and Pockets Pool & Pub in Tallahassee.

The state agency reported that the companies searched a limit of 50% maximum indoor capacity and served alcohol to protectors who were “shoulder to shoulder” in bar areas.

Department Secretary Halsey Beshears on June 26 banned the sale of alcohol for on-site consumption at businesses that receive more than 50% of their gross revenue from alcohol sales. The move essentially closed most bars and nightclubs, although establishments could remain open if they had enough revenue from food sales. Beshears made the move because bars exceeded requirements that were set to try to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus.

Beshears recently held private meetings with craft breweries and bar owners to discuss ways for businesses to reopen.

The agency has not announced what has been discussed or what actions can be taken to help those companies.
