Three Chicago police officers were shot Thursday morning while detaining a suspected robbery of a violent car outside a police station on the city’s West Side, authorities said.
The suspect was also shot after the shooting erupted around 9:40 a.m. in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood, outside the District 25 police station, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown told reporters outside the Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

The suspect fired multiple shots at police during the arrest, Brown said, hitting several officers.
An officer suffered a bullet wound to the chin and neck, and was also hit by his bulletproof vest, Brown said. A second officer was hit in the vest. A third officer suffered a gunshot wound to the hip. Two other officers suffered chest pain and were hospitalized.
The first officer was rushed to the Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Dr. Stephen Kingsley, a trauma surgeon, told reporters that the officer was given a breathing tube and that doctors were working to stabilize it.
The other four officers were being treated at Loyola Hospital, Brown said. The suspect was taken to Stoger Hospital for treatment.
Brown emphasized the dangers that all Chicago police officers experience every day while protecting city residents.
“When they leave home, they leave their loved ones and put on these stars and risk everything, risk everything to protect us all,” he said.
Brown said the shooting is under investigation and more details will be provided later.
