3 Bay Area counties now on the California coronavirus watch list

On Friday, Marin County joined Solano and Santa Clara counties on the list.

According to CDPH, Marin County is experiencing high virus transmission and more hospitalizations. Some of this is due to the massive outbreak in San Quentin, where 1 in 3 inmates tested positive for COVID-19. Additionally, the state noted an increase in community transmission among essential workers and “outbreaks in congregational settings and Latinx neighborhoods.”

Solano County ties part of its increase to “many dozen” vineyard workers who became ill in the past two weeks; The state says those people work in Sonoma and Napa counties but reside in communities in Solano County. A “continued increase in cases related to family reunions and other social gatherings on weekends” is exacerbating the increase in hospitalizations in the county.

Santa Clara County is experiencing an increase in coronavirus hospitalizations, but the state believes much of this can be attributed to patients from other counties seeking care there. Patients transferred from long-term care facilities are also being admitted to county hospitals. Once the epicenter of the Bay Area outbreak, Santa Clara County hospitals are some of the state’s most experienced in treating patients with COVID-19.

“Although the percentage change in hospitalizations shows an increase, the increase in the absolute number of hospitalized patients is low relative to the population size in Santa Clara County and low relative to the number of hospital beds available in the county, “he added. California Department of Public Health said.

Many rural counties, such as Stanislaus, are seeing an increase due to groups related to family reunion and “less attention to personal protection measures, such as covering your face and distancing yourself socially.”

Counties on the state watch list are working with CDPH to identify the causes of any troubling trends and the next steps to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Contra Costa County, which was on the watch list last week, has been removed as its outbreak became less severe.
