22 new deaths and over 900 new cases reported in Orange County on July 23 – Orange County Register


The Orange County Health Care Agency reported another 905 new cases of coronavirus as of Thursday, July 23.

The cumulative total number of positive cases for Orange County is 32,648 since local testing began in March. Almost half of the cases, or 17,091 as of Thursday, are estimated to have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the previous cumulative case count of 28 days.

There were 22 new deaths reported in Orange County on Thursday, bringing the total number of residents who have died to 543.

The data on deaths in the county is either compiled from death certificates or collected throughout the investigation of the case and can take weeks to process, authorities say.

Of the 543 deaths, 245 were residents of skilled nursing facilities, 17 were in care facilities, and one was listed as homeless.

The state coronavirus board reports that there have been 145 deaths in Orange County in the past 14 days.

Across the county, 380,657 tests for the coronavirus have been reported since the testing began, with data through July 21. There were 6,543 daily tests reported in Thursday’s update.

The state gave a test positivity rate of 10.3% for the county, with 96,596 tests conducted in the past two weeks.

According to the California Department of Health, there have been 9,959 new cases of COVID-19 in Orange County in the past 14 days. Fewer than 9,615 new cases in yesterday’s report.

The state agency also reports that 751 patients hospitalized in the past 14 days (suspicious and positive) at 33 hospitals across the county as of Thursday.

The state’s coronavirus control panel shows that Orange County has at least 46% of its ICU beds available Thursday.

  • 85 and older: 31% (171)
  • 75-84: 24% (132)
  • 65-74: 18% (99)
  • 55-64: 13% (69)
  • 45-54: 9% (48)
  • 35-44: 3% (16)
  • 25-34: 1% (7)
  • 18-24: <1% (1)
  • 17 and under: 0%

The data released daily is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
