Another 22 cases of coronavirus have been reported in Maine, health officials said Wednesday.
Wednesday’s report brings the total number of coronavirus cases in Maine to 4,070. Of these, 3,662 were positively confirmed, while 408 were classified as “probable cases,” according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
New cases were reported in counties of Androscoggin (3), Cumberland (8), Hancock (1), Penobscot (2), Sagadahoc (1) and York (6), data show. Where another case was reported was not immediately available.
The agency revised its cumulative total from Tuesday to 4,048, down from 4,050, meaning there was an increase of 20 in the previous day’s report, data show. While the Maine CDC continues to investigate previously reported cases, some are determined to have not been coronavirus, or coronavirus cases involving no Mainers. These are removed from the cumulative total of the state.
No new deaths were reported Wednesday, bringing the statewide death toll to 126. Nearly all deaths have been in Mainers over the age of 60.
To date, 394 Mainers have been hospitalized at some point with COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. Of those, nine are currently hospitalized, with four in critical care and one on a ventilator.
Meanwhile, 19 more people have recovered from the coronavirus, bringing the total recovery to 3,579. That means there are 365 active and “likely” cases in the state, rising from 364 on Tuesday.
A majority of the cases – 2,271 – have been in Mainers under the age of 50, while more cases have been reported in women than men, according to the Maine CDC.
As of Wednesday, there were 202,032 negative test results out of 207,843 overall. That means about 2.5 percent of all tests returned positive, according to data from Maine CDC.
The coronavirus is the most severe hit in Cumberland County, where 2,097 cases have been reported and where the majority of virus deaths – 69 – are concentrated. It is one of four counties – the others being Androscoggin, Penobscot and York, with 568, 153 and 680 cases respectively – where “community transmission” has been confirmed, according to the Maine CDC.
There are two criteria for setting up community transmission: at least 10 confirmed cases and that at least 25 percent of those are not related to known matters such as travel. That second condition is not yet “satisfied” in other counties.
Other cases have been reported in Aroostook (33), Franklin (45), Hancock (37), Kennebec (171), Knox (27), Lincoln (35), Oxford (55), Piscataquis (4), Sagadahoc (56), Somerset (33), Waldo (62) and Washington (13) counties. Information on where another case was reported was not immediately available Wednesday morning.
As of Wednesday morning, the coronavirus had killed 5,161,612 people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as causing 164,976 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.
