2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe spied on, will remain rear-wheel drive

The redesigned BMW 4 Series Coupé went into production earlier this month, and now the company is turning its attention to the next generation of the 2 Series Coupé.

Stuck in testing in Mexico, the redesigned model is heavily disguised, but appears to have a wide grille that is flanked by curved headlights.

While the grille is camouflaged, the wide bottom opening suggests it will avoid the controversial Series 4 “bucktooth” design. Considering that, we’re sure several fans will breathe a sigh of relief.

The rest of the car seems quite evolutionary, but we can see that it will feature recessed door handles similar to those that will be used in the next i4. The body also looks a bit more streamlined, though there will be aggressive side skirts.

Camouflage does a very good job of hiding the rear, but there is a dual exhaust system and a small rear spoiler. We can also take a look at the taillights, but it is unclear if these are production units.

BMW has been very quiet about the next coupe, but it wouldn’t be a front-wheel drive like the 2-Series Grand Coupe. Instead, the model will be backed by the rear-wheel drive CLAR architecture.

Engine options are a bit of a mystery, but the car could be equipped with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine that develops around 255 hp (190 kW / 258 PS). We can also expect a six-cylinder engine and previous reports have suggested that there will be an M2 with a detuned version of the 3.0-liter, twin-turbo engine found in the X3 M and M4 M. It is rumored to have more than 420 bhp ( 313 kW / 426 hp).

The Series 2 Coupe is expected to be unveiled next year, but nothing is official at the moment.
