The next generation Audi A4 will probably not hit dealerships until the 2022 model year, so it will be a while before we detect spy test vehicles. Until then, however, two new renderings by artist Tobias Büttner show what the popular Audi model will look like when it arrives. It’s doubtful that Audi will radically redesign the next A4 away from its current design, instead likely taking an evolutionary approach to rework the model’s appearance.
Details about the upcoming A4 are scant, as Audi just announced updates for the 2021 A4 in May. However, there have been some early rumors hinting at what could change and what will remain the same. A report from last year said Audi would keep the next-gen A4 mounted on its current MLB platform, rather than moving it to the company’s front-engine-design MQB architecture that underpins other Audi models like the A1, A3, and TT. .
The A4 style in the renderings does not stray too far from the current design. However, it is much more chiseled and defined than today’s car. It still features the large Audi grille flanked by reworked intakes on the edges of the front bumper and tight headlights. A4 renderings also give the car sculpted sides, while the rear end gets a new design topped off with new taillights. The car looks longer and shorter than the outgoing model.
It is too early to speculate on powertrains, although the automaker added 13 horsepower (10 kilowatts) and a smooth 12-volt hybrid system to the model four-cylinder engines for the 2021 model year. The company’s Quattro all-wheel drive also became standard on all A4 versions. As we enter the new generation of the model, those changes are likely to carry over, especially the smooth hybrid system as automakers continue to focus on fuel economy and emissions. We look forward to learning more in the years to come as Audi begins testing and developing the next-gen A4.
