New for the Porsche Taycan: Plug & Charge, Features on Demand, Head-up Display
Faster sprints and more convenient charging
Stuttgart, Germany. The change of model year in October will bring numerous new features for the Porsche Taycan. The new Plug & Charge feature enables convenient charging and payment without the need for an app as an app: insert the charging cable and the Taycan enables encrypted communication with the Plug & Charge compatible charging station. As a result, the charging process starts automatically. Payments are also processed automatically.
Additional innovations include functions for cars that can be booked online flexibly (Functions on Demand, FoD), a head-up display in color and a board charger with a charging capacity of up to 22 kW. In the future, the custom air suspension will have a Smartlift feature.
The acceleration values of the Taycan Turbo S have also been improved. With Launch Control, it now jumps from 9 to seconds from zero to 200 km / h, and then underscores the previous time by 0.2 seconds. It covers the quarter mile in 10.7 seconds (previously 10.8 seconds). As before, the Taycan demonstrates its performance capability multiple times in a row without any drop in performance, which is typical of a sports car.
The fully updated electric sports car will be available for order from mid-September and from mid-October at Porsche Centers.
Intuitive display system and intelligent chassis
A color head-up display is now optional. This projects relevant information directly into the driver’s vision field. The display is divided into the main display section, status section and a section for viewing temporary content such as calls or voice control commands. A navigation display, power meter and a user-defined display can also be selected as pre-sets.
Thanks to the new Smartlift feature, installed as standard in combination with adaptive air extension, the Taycan can be programmed so that it is automatically raised in certain, recurring sections, for example at speed bumps or on garage exits. The Smartlift feature can also actively influence the driving height of the car on highway driving by adjusting the level of the car to the best possible compromise between efficiency and driving comfort.
An on board AC charger that delivers 22 kW is now also available as new optional equipment. With this unit, the battery charges in about half the time it takes the standard 11-kW AC charger. This option will be available at the end of this year.
Flexible post-purchase upgrades with Functions on Demand (FoD)
Thanks to FoD, Taycan drivers can provide various convenience and features as needed. What makes this approach special is that it also works after making the purchase and for the original configuration of the sports car. Thanks to online updates over the air, it is not necessary to attend a workshop. The Porsche Intelligent Range Manager (PIRM) is already available as FoD. Power Steering Plus, Active Lane Keep Assist and Porsche InnoDrive will now be added as further FoD features.
Customers can choose whether they want to purchase the respective feature for their Taycan or sign up for it on a monthly basis. Customers benefit from three test months if they opt for a monthly subscription. After registering, select the desired feature (s) in the Porsche Connect Store, and, provided a connection can be established, the Porsche backend sends a data packet to the Taycan via the mobile phone network. Drivers are informed of the availability of such a data package by Porsche Communication Management (PCM). Activation then takes a few minutes. A message appears on the central display after successful activation. With the change year of the model year, four features can be purchased and three are available as monthly subscriptions.
Active Lane Keep Assist keeps the red in the center of the lane with continuous steering interventions – even in slow traffic. InnoDrive adapts the speed individually to the conditions, such as speed limits, bends, roundabouts, situations where you have to give way or stop, all in typical sports car fashion. Both features are available for a fee of 19.50 euros per month or 808.10 euros each as a purchase option.
With active route guidance, Porsche Intelligent Range Manager (PIRM) works in the background, optimizing all system parameters to achieve the highest levels of comfort and shortest travel time. This feature costs 10.72 euros a month as is available with a one-time fee of 398.69 euros.
Power Steering Plus works based on the speed of the red. It responds directly and accurately to high speeds and provides stronger steering support at lower speeds. This feature on demand is available at a one-time fee of 320.71 euros. It is not available as a monthly option. All prices are recommended retail prices for Germany including 16 percent VAT.
Even more convenient charging
Charging while conserving battery power is another new feature. It can limit the charging capacity at suitable charging points (for example Ionity high power charging stations) to about 200 kW, if customers plan to take a longer drive. This extends the service life of the battery and reduces the total power loss. Drivers can select the charge while maintaining the battery function on the central display. Of course, if customers choose not to use this option, a charging capacity of up to 270 kW will remain available at 800-volt high-power charging stations.
Additional, new, intelligent charging features are available in combination with Mobile Charger Connect and Home Energy Manager. These include the power protection feature, which is now able to prevent an overload of the household connection, regardless of the phase, as well as optimized charging with energy produced domestically. Use this feature to charge the Taycan using solar energy generated inland as part of a deliberate process. Once it reaches the freely configurable, minimum battery charge level, the system only consumes solar energy that is not used by the building.
Plug & Charge simplifies charging: Taycan drivers just need to plug in the charging cable and charging is on the way. Verification data is stored in the car. As a result, the charging station automatically identifies the connected car. ISO standard 15118 ensures that the communication between infrastructure and the car is manipulative. Payments are also processed automatically. Plug & Charge is already operational at Ionity charging stations in Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Italy and the Czech Republic. Twelve more European countries will follow at the beginning of 2021. In the US and Canada, Plug & Charge will also be available from Electrify America and Electrify Canada at many charging points from the beginning of 2021.
Greater choice of colors
The 2021 model year offers a selection of seven new exterior light colors: Mahogany Metallic, Frozenberry Metallic, Cherry Metallic, Coffee Beige Metallic, Chalk, Neptune Blue and Ice Gray Metallic.
The Carbon Sport Design package is available for all versions of Taycan. It includes elements such as carbon glass fiber inserts in the bottom of the front section and in the side edge trims, such as carbon fiber fins on the rear diffuser.
Digital radio now as standard. Digitally transmitted radio stations in DAB, DAB + and DMB audio formats offer significantly better sound quality. Porsche has also improved the standard equipment in terms of connectivity. Apple® podcasts can now be selected as an individual source for media.
