Mercedes’ teaser campaign for the new S-Class is in full swing, but that doesn’t stop us from sharing additional spy photos of the full-size premium sedan with our audience. Sindelfingen’s luxobarge has been closely watched and personally tested in less camouflage than ever to reveal more details of the final design.
The sleeker headlights and pop-up door handles are the main new features at first glance, but we’re noticing additional changes compared to the outgoing S-Class. Located just below the belt line, the upper character line now extends from front to back to create a visual connection between the headlights and taillights. The electronic handles have been moved slightly down the doors, while the lower character line is flatter compared to the W222.
Similar signs include the conservatory and the generous rear overhang of what appears to be the standard S-Class wheelbase. Mercedes has already confirmed that there will be an LWB model alongside the extra long Maybach derivative, which is expected to remain the only S model to offer the V12, now with AWD. We get the impression that the silver car is a higher level trim level judging from the larger wheels and silver exhaust finishes.
Speaking of the rear, by far the biggest change will be the change from vertical to horizontal taillights that extend into the trunk lid. You can actually see the reversing lights peeking through the camouflage in the trunk, indicating that the new S-Class W223 will follow recent sedans carrying the three-pointed star. The boot apparently has a wider opening at the bottom than before, which should make loading and unloading the cargo area easier.

Mercedes didn’t bother covering the interior because it revealed it last week in a full preview of the sedan’s dashboard. The two prototypes of rival BMW 7 Series appear to be practically ready to hit the assembly line, and if we had a catch, we were hoping for better integration of the radar sensor and camera on the front grill. They protrude too much and interfere with a clean design.
Additional pieces of the S-Class puzzle will be put into place on July 29 when Mercedes will reveal more about the comfort and safety features of its revised flagship. On August 12, the interior, beyond its five screens, will be detailed in preparation for a full official reveal scheduled for September.
