We have now reached that point on the MVB list where I have to try not to chatter about each player’s potential. Over the past three seasons, John Elway added a group of prospects in key positions. By saving money on quarterback, edge rusher and wide receiver, the Broncos have been able to bolster their depth table with talented veterans. As the younger players develop, the Broncos will be the envy of most of the NFL.
A quick reminder of the guidelines I follow:
1. What do I hope they will bring to the list in the future?
2. Place value
3. Salary compared to past and expected future performance
Players can be found 48-43 here.
Players can be found 42-37 here.
Players can be found 36-31 here.
Players can be found 30-25 here.
Players can be found 24-19 here.
Players can be found 18-13 here.
Of all the Broncos’ free agents in 2019, Jackson was the most nervous. A great bet for a 31-year-old corner that may or may not move to safety seems like a risky bet. Now, luck in health obviously played a role in derailing both JaWuan James and Bryce Callahan, but Jackson’s performance in 2019 serves as proof that Fangio knows how to project and fit the defenses into his scheme better than I do.
The DUI suspension at the end of the season and all the young and exciting pieces have made it easy to forget how good Jackson was a year ago, but there’s no question: He was very good alongside Justin Simmons. So why is Jackson sitting outside the top 10 of the MVB? He is now 32 years old and has a contract that is highly movable in 2021. With the NFL salary cap almost certain to drop, we may be looking at the final year of Jackson’s short orange and blue career.
Two of my favorite moves the Broncos made this offseason may seem like year-long rentals when all is said and done. Both AJ Bouye and Casey were acquired by John Elway on smart exchanges this offseason. If he can stay healthy, Casey will make Jon Robinson and the Tennessee Titans look really dumb for giving him away for just a 7th-round pick.
The weird thing about Casey is that he probably would have been cut or traded somewhere else if the Bengals hadn’t surpassed Elway by Houston’s DJ Reader during free agency. In the end, the Broncos got the best fast, penetrating pass. Casey combines skillful manual labor with special lateral mobility. Don’t be surprised if Fangio does a stunt series with Casey, Bradley Chubb, and Von Miller this year.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to ignore an impending capitalization crisis when it comes to evaluating the value of Bouye or Casey. As Jeff Essary and I discussed for Cover 2 Broncos, acquiring them in a trade also means that if the Broncos need to pull a cord to avoid the falling salary cap in 2021, Casey’s lack of collateral makes him a prime candidate for the bloc. .
10) Graham Glasgow – Right guard or center
I rummaged through the Glasgow movie when the Broncos signed the former Lion in March. It should be an immediate improvement over Ron Leary and improve both pass protection against Drew Lock and help Munchak diversify the running game. I loved the signature. A + grade loved it. Last week I studied Dalton Risner and how Mike Munchak used his guards a year ago. I’m all kinds of jazz again.
9. Alexander Johnson – Linebacker
Until the day of my death, I will wonder why Alexander Johnson did not play the first four games of the 2019 season. Even after a good preseason, Vic Fangio chose to play a newly signed Corey Nelson in Week 1 against the Raiders.
When Johnson finally took the field, he looked like a ton of bricks on Philip Rivers’ back. The 255lb linebacker was the key to propping up a leaky running defense and fell with a clutch interception to boot. He held it for the remaining 11 games and now enters his first full season preparing to start. If more time in the Fangio system can also help you better anticipate opponents in coverage? He will earn recognition as one of the best off-ball linebackers in the league.
There are two things that work against Dino’s location on this list. Because he started so late in the NFL, he will become a restricted Free Agent in 2021 in 2021 in 2021. Johnson may have only two seasons left in orange and blue before Elway allows another team to pay the player from 30 years in free agency.
9. Dalton Risner – Left Guard
Risner’s mobility is a central part of the Broncos’ blocking scheme under Mike Munchak. The Wiggins graduate was the best player on the offensive line as a rookie. His manual work, anchor and mental processing really impressed me when I studied his tape. Adjusting your footwork could help you become one of the best guards in the league.
Noah Fant was never going to be George Kittle, but he can be an even better Evan Engram. He is an athletic monster who is getting faster than Courtland Sutton. Under Pat Shurmur Fant’s athletic gifts, you’ll get more replays as a big catcher and fewer snapshots that will try to block the NFL’s Khalil Mack and Danielle Hunter.
When Pat Shurmur was first hired, I went and looked for target distributions on his offenses for the past three seasons. For perspective, I added those numbers in and averaged them and then compared them to the 2019 Broncos target distribution. Over the past three seasons, Shurmur’s tight ends averaged seven touchdowns and 821 yards per season, and Evan Engram missed 13 contests. .
A few weeks ago I dove into the Noah Fant rookie season and the 2019 Shurmur offensive to project where things are going from here. If you did the necessary work this offseason, the sky is the limit.

How good can a second year guard be?
Here’s why you should expect a ‘slow build’ from the young Broncos offense.
But the reality is that for a young offense that needed replays more than most units around the NFL, the pandemic has already taken away growth opportunities with OTAs and team-organized practices being phased out. The fact that the team doesn’t put on pads until three weeks after showing up for camp and doesn’t play the preseason at all further depletes the replay reserve at a critical level.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Payton said he would not be surprised if some 2020 games are suspended. He noted the possibility that a team may have all players in a certain position group unable to play due to positive evidence for COVID-19. A member of the Competition Committee, Payton did not address whether those games would be rescheduled or simply scrapped. Some games may simply not play, and some teams may have fewer than 16 games when the season ends. The position of the playoffs, at that point, would depend on the winning percentage.
