Some 17,000 PG&E customers in Berkeley could be affected Tuesday night by rolling out blackouts “if people do not restrict electricity use,” the city says.

Berkeley staff announced the new eruption details Tuesday just after 4 p.m. It follows a similar announcement Monday related to the state’s ongoing heat wave and subsequent voltage on the power grid. PG&E said about 34,000 Berkeley customers could lose power on Monday, but in the end no one in the state did.

Stops in Berkeley are likely to occur from 4 to 5 p.m., the city said, “if people do not limit power consumption.” Rolling blackouts could also occur Wednesday, the city said earlier.

Officials say saving energy, especially from early afternoon until 10 a.m., “could help curb extreme measures, such as rotating strikes.”

Charging telephones and medical devices, signing up for emergency alarms, checking emergency supplies and saving electricity by using high energy devices early in the morning or late at night are some of the steps that members of the the community can take to preparing, the city said.

PG&E has created a new online lookup tool to see if an address can be affected by a rolling blackout.
