It has taken years, but OnePlus is finally starting at 159, getting into the smartwatch game with the newly announced OnePlus and Watch. The new watch (as unveiled last week) is a round design that looks like a regular wristwatch instead of a rectangular shape that has become popular with the Wrp Watch and its imitators.
The case itself is made of stainless steel, measuring 46 mm, and has two buttons on the side (one of which has the OnePlus logo). It will be available in two colors: silver and black. The display is a 1.39-inch OLED panel at 326ppi with sapphire glass.
The watch will also feature a version of the OnePlus VP charge system (promising one week of 20-minute charge battery life). OnePlus promises that the watch should stay on the same charge for up to two weeks or up to a week for heavy users.
Specs wise, the OnePlus and Watch come with 1GB RAM, 4GB internal storage and integrated speakers. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS are all built-in, but not a cellular option. If you want connectivity on the watch, you’ll need to connect to a nearby phone.
Fitness is also a big part of OnePlus and Watch. It will offer more than 110 workout modes, offer built-in GPS, and IP68 water and dust resistance. In addition, the OnePlus and Watch have built-in storage for music, allowing users to store up to 500 songs to listen to their Bluetooth headphones while on the run, even if they don’t have a phone. OnePlus Watch can automatically detect workouts and monitor sleep, stress, blood oxygen saturation and heart rate.
However, OnePlus is not using Warner OS for OnePlus Watch. The company announced before the event that it would use RTOS-style software software setup (companies like Fitbit), along with a companion app, to allow it to connect to your phone to receive calls and notifications. (The iOS app is also promising for Apple Pal users in the future.)
That means things like app selection and custom faces will be largely limited to what OnePlus can build in-house – so no third-party apps, at least for now. That said, to get started, you’ll have to choose from dozens of Watchface options (with additional customization choices to add more style options), so users will get some relief.
The OnePlus Watch can also be connected to a OnePlus TV (where available), allowing it to be used remotely. And if you go to sleep when you watch TV on a OnePlus set, the clock can automatically turn off the TV when you know you’re asleep.
The company also announced a limited edition model made of a cobalt alloy, which it says is twice as difficult as stainless steel. OnePlus says the Cobalt Limited Edition is “coming soon,” but the company is not yet offering a price.
The OnePlus Watch will start at 9 159 and will be available on the OnePlus website from April 14.
