15 players test positive for COVID-19 after reporting to training camp

The NHL has released a statement that 15 players tested positive for COVID-19 after reporting to training camp. Over 1,450 tests in total were administered to the more than 250 players in the camp. All of these tests have been administered after the start of Phase 2 of the return-to-play initiative, which started on June 8.

Additionally, 11 additional players have tested positive for coronavirus outside of NHL training camps. All players who tested positive were quarantined.

It is difficult to know exactly what to do with the results of these tests. It is not entirely clear at this time how many of these players were asymptomatic at the time, nor is it clear whether there was an additional spread to staff or families. Assuming the best, an infection rate of 6% would not threaten the restart of the season, especially if any part of these positive tests turns out to be asymptomatic. Positive tests are inevitable, and part of playing again is acknowledging it.
