The victims’ ages range from 21 to 65 years.
At least 15 people were shot outside a Chicago funeral home on Tuesday night, according to the Chicago Police Department.
An unknown number of people inside a vehicle shot several people on the street attending a funeral on West 79th Street around 6:30 p.m., police said. People on the street exchanged fire with people in the vehicle, according to authorities.
Police said the suspects’ car crashed and they fled the scene. 60 caps were found at the scene, Eric Carter, the first assistant superintendent of Chicago police, said at a news conference Tuesday night.
“As people were leaving the funeral home, the shots sounded like it was literally raining down on them,” witness Jenneth Hughes told ABC WLS station Chicago.
Police said 15 people, 10 women and five men, ranging in age from 21 to 65, were transferred to five different hospitals with gunshot wounds. According to the police, three women and three men were in serious condition, while the remaining victims were in good condition.
Carter said the motive for the shooting is unknown at this time. A person was being questioned and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot was scheduled to give a press conference Wednesday morning with updates. She condemned the shooting on Twitter and urged anyone with information about the incident to call the police information line.
