14-year-old man killed in shooting near Seattle Capitol Organized Protest Zone

One person was killed and a 14-year-old boy was injured in a shooting Monday morning near Seattle’s self-declared Capitol Hill organized protest zone.

The Seattle Police Department responded to multiple shooting reports at 3 am near 12th Avenue and Pike Street. Police said callers reported that several unidentified people had fired at a white Jeep that had been at or near one of the area’s barriers.

A man who was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after the Monday morning shooting died, said Susan Gregg, a hospital spokeswoman. Another victim, a 14-year-old man, was hospitalized with gunshot wounds, according to police.

No suspect has been publicly identified. Police said they were investigating the incident, but while searching for evidence in the Jeep they discovered that the crime scene had been “disturbed”.

The Capitol Hill Organized Protest Zone, or CHOP, was established earlier this month by protesters protesting police brutality and the murder of George Floyd after the Seattle Police Department vacated the East Precinct there.

Monday’s shooting was the fourth shooting near or in the CHOP zone in nine days, reported NBC affiliate KING. At least one other person has been killed, and on June 22, Seattle officials ordered those in the area to leave.

Seattle officials said Sunday that CHOP would be dismantled, but that it remained intact through the night.

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said last week that officers would return to the East Precinct, but did not say when.
