10-year-old killed and two teens injured in New Orleans shooting

“We as a society are talking about social justice versus social injustice. We as a community have to look at ourselves,” Police Chief Shaun Ferguson told reporters on the scene.

The three were on a residential street Monday when they were shot by people who approached them, Ferguson said. It is unclear if the victims and the shooters knew each other.

Two teenagers were taken to the hospital: a woman with a gunshot wound to the stomach and a man with a gunshot wound to the leg. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a NOPD statement.

“It is not only unfortunate, it is unacceptable behavior,” Mayor LaToya Cantrell said Monday night.

At least 6 children were killed by gun violence across the country this holiday weekend

The 10-year-old victim follows at least six other children who were killed by gun violence over the July 4 weekend in the United States.

The children, ages 6 to 14, were shot dead while doing everyday things. Investigations are still ongoing for a 6-year-old boy who sustained gunshot wounds. Natalia Wallace, 7, was shot while playing with a group of children in a playground. Secoriea Turner, 8, was sitting in a car with her mother when the shooting erupted. Royta De’Marco Giles, 8, was shot dead as a spectator in a shopping mall. Davon McNeal, 11, was running from his family’s car to grab a phone charger when the shooting started.

The violence spread across the country, from Georgia, Alabama, Washington DC, Illinois, and California.
