1 injured in Massachusetts mall shooting: police

The South Shore Plaza shopping center in Braintree, Massachusetts was closed.

A person was injured in a shooting at the South Shore Plaza shopping center in Braintree, Massachusetts, officials announced via Twitter.

Massachusetts state police said a person was transported to the hospital and that the suspect is still at large. Braintree police said the person suffered non-fatal injuries.

After initially saying they were responding to an “active shooter,” the Braintree Police Department said it now believes it was a targeted shooting.

Special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are assisting the Braintree Police in responding to the scene.

The Braintree Police Department said via Twitter that the stores are currently closed, urging customers to stay where they are now. In a follow-up tweet, the agency said “the suspect or suspects are believed to have fled the mall on foot” and urged residents to take refuge on the spot and report suspicious activity.

A witness inside the mall described the chaos to Boston ABC affiliate WCVB, saying he heard “six shots.”

“Everything was acting normal, day by day, I was upstairs near Sears, as I walked towards Sears, I was on the second level, I saw people start to go to the railing, look up to the first floor and then just I heard six shots one after the other, then he was silent, “he said. “I didn’t see any shooters or anything like that. And then it all turned into chaos, the mall, everyone trying to find a way out.”

Braintree is located about 25 minutes south of downtown Boston.
