- ZTE will shortly announce its first mass-produced phone with a selfie camera under-display.
- Named the ZTE Axon 20 5G, the phone could also be the first device in the world to sport this technology.
- The company will launch the device on September 1st.
In the race to launch the first smartphone with an under-display selfie camera, ZTE is already celebrating victory. The company announced on Sunday (August 16) that it will debut on September 1 the ‘first under-display camera smartphone’ in the form of the ZTE Axon 20 5G.
Under-display selfie camera tech has been a highly controversial development for smartphone makers in recent months, with the likes of Xiaomi, Oppo, and Huawei plaguing their various tasks. It’s a technology that can spell the death of the notch, punch-hole and pop-up selfie camera as well.
However, this technology is not without its challenges. General manager Redmi Lu Weibing in January noted that under-screen selfie cameras were “at the time” impossible due to the high-density OLED panels used on modern smartphones. These tightly packed pixels meant that the camera lying beneath them did not need the light to produce decent images. While instead lower resolution panels could be used, this could be seen as regression rather than progress.
However, it seems that ZTE has found a way to eliminate these issues, or at least feel confident enough that current technology is adequate. It is not clear who will supply ZTE with under-screen selfie cameras, but the first solution was recently brought into mass production by Chinese firm Visionox.
In addition to the selfie camera, ZTE kept quiet on the actual specifications of the Axon 20 5G. Earlier this month, the specifications of the device were apparently met by TENAA (via GSMArena). The phone could have a 6.92-inch display, a triple rear camera array headed by a 64MP snapper, and a 4,120mAh battery. As for the selfie camera, users could see a 32MP sensor hidden under the display.
ZTE is set to confirm the specifications, pricing and availability of Axon 20 5G on September 1st.
