Zidane admits he does not know if he will stay at Real Madrid next season

The French tactician declared that “things can happen overnight” in soccer and gave no guarantees about his future in the White’s refuge.

Zinedine Zidane has just won the League and has a contract with Real Madrid until 2022, but he acknowledged that his future at the club could quickly have a different perspective.

In his first full season at the helm, Zidane has led Madrid to success in the Spanish Super Cup and La Liga to bring his trophy to two spells in the canoe at 11, three fewer than equaling Miguel Muñoz’s club record.

With the league over, the Spanish champions can focus on the second leg of their last Champions League game against Manchester City. They fall 2-1 before the return match at Etihad Stadium on August 7.

Zidane guided Madrid to the Champions League trophy, which is considered the main goal each season at the Santiago Bernabéu, in three consecutive seasons during his first stint as coach.

Despite winning the league on Thursday, Zidane was asked if he could guarantee he would be at the helm next season.

He replied, “No one knows what will happen in the future. I never talk about next season or next year. I have a contract and I am happy. You never know what will happen in the future.”

“Things can change overnight in the world of football and I have no idea what the future holds.”

Zidane urged his team to maintain their intensity in their last league game of the season on Sunday against Leganes, who will hope to get a positive result and maintain his top-notch status.

“We have to find that motivation. It is a league game. When we put on the Real Madrid shirt, we want to win every game,” he said.

“That is the DNA at Real Madrid. It is a league game, not a friendly one, and we want to play well. I don’t think we have anything to prove. We just want to keep this positive momentum. We want to keep it victorious.

“We have another great game. We said there were 11 finals. There were 10 and we won the league, but we want to finish in the best possible way.”

“We want to keep pushing and testing ourselves until the end of the season. There will be a few days off after the game against Leganés, but the season continues. We will train and prepare for Ciudad again after the game against Leganés.”

Karim Benzema scored both goals for Madrid in their 2-1 win over Villarreal last time, bringing him to 21 in the League for the season, two fewer than league leader Barcelona captain Lionel Messi.

While Zidane would be proud that Benzema won the Pichichi Prize for the player with the highest score in La Liga, he was not willing to give any clues about his team’s selection for the trip to Butarque.

“I would love for Benzema to get the Pichichi,” said Zidane. “But I’m not going to say who is going to play. He is a player who did a great job and deserves to finish the season as the top scorer, but it will come down to the final game of the season. Let’s see what happens on Sunday.”
