Don’t expect any footage from 2017 League of Justice not shot by Zack Snyder to appear in the director’s new cut. Snyder almost ripped the previous Warner Bros. cut with images taken by Joss Whedon a new one, in the clearest and clearest of tones League of Justice What we’ll see on HBO Max in 2021 is totally his vision. If I had any questions about whether the shadows of the ancient League of Justice maybe they’d slip into this new version, well, consider those questions answered.
Snyder shared his complete and unfiltered thoughts on Snyder’s cut League of Justice during their Justice Con panel discussion on Saturday afternoon. When the subject of exactly what material will be converted into your League of Justice the cut came, Snyder didn’t hold back. It started with: “I would destroy the film, set it on fire, before using a single frame that I didn’t photograph.”
Things only got hotter from there. Snyder continued, telling the Justice Con moderating team:
“That is a fucking difficult fact. I would literally explode that thing, if I thought for a second … Anything you see in this movie that reminds you of the movie premiere, which again, as you know, I’ve never seen, would be because that was something I had done, and I was being borrowed for whatever, that Frankenstein monster you got in the theater.
So there you have it. Snyder is certainly not a fan of the 2017 version of League of Justice. And while he doesn’t specifically mention Whedon in his comments, Snyder’s mention of “a single painting I didn’t photograph” reads like a dig in the director. But, it’s also worth noting that even Whedon’s images were subject to Warner Bros. ‘notorious notes and editing, further validating Snyder’s sharp assessment of the theatrical cut of League of Justice like “that Frankenstein’s monster”.
As shared in May, thanks to an in-depth report from The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder has been working hard to put together his final version of League of Justice. Things started with the combined efforts of a passionate fan base (to put it mildly) and Snyder’s quest to revive the project, resulting in a green light to prepare a new cut for release on HBO Max. Since May, Snyder has released new clips of his upcoming League of Justice, promising that more good things will come at the next DC Fan Dome event in August.
