So the Chicago White Sox are interested in keeping Tony La Russia as their manager? Everything old is new again.
La Rusa is 76. Only Connie Mack has managed more games. La Rusa was inducted into the Hall of Fame six years ago, and this is one of the differences between the two: he is the inventor of the modern bullpen.
In the late 1980s, at one time relievers were considered an interchangeable group of mostly failed starters, La Rusa turned Dennis Ackersley closer to the starter and, finally, into the Hall of Fame.
The idea of closeness was not new, but La Rusa was a bullpen organization. He defined the roles, including what roles he would define, what sports you could get into, and what toughness you could face. If you knew what your role would be, or so the principle is gone, you can be comfortable with it and better prepared for it.
The modern manager always talks about putting his players in position to succeed. The Dodgers haven’t done their best this postseason, and their management was most questionable in their early two-hour use on Wednesday.
Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May combined for eight outs to beat Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 in Game 2 of the World Series. The best series of seven is tied into one game.
Gonsolin and May spent the summer in the deepest depths of the game, covering no less than a third of the game. The Dodgers are running a 15-man pitching staff, with Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buhler as the only “starters.” There is no “near”.
They consider Gonsolin and Maine to be their two best weapons and they want to use them in different roles, often to strangers.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, “Ask a big question that can be said in very clear words.”
“These people are out of control. Credit them, they’re not making excuses. They expect to make the pitch themselves. It’s definitely different. But we still need those people to move forward to win this thing.
In the regular season, introduced May 12, 10 of them begin. In his two relief appearances, both in preparation for the playoffs in September, he threw four innings at a time and 51/3 innings at a time.
In the postseason, he has made six appearances, never more than two innings.
He has been an opener three times. In his relief game, he entered the game in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
On Wednesday, for the first time in the postson sun, he entered the middle of the inning. He gave up one and two runs for the first two batters he faced. In the next inning, in the fifth, he gave up a two-run home run, putting the Dodgers in a 5-0 hole.
In the regular season, May posted an earnings-run average of 2.57. In the postseason, its IRA is 5.00.
Inequality is also best for gonsolin. His era in the regular season, when he started in all but one of his nine appearances: 2.31.
In the postseason, he has made a traditional start, starting as an opener, and has a look of relief behind an opener. Its postseason Era is 9.39.
Gonsolin started Wednesday, with the Dodgers pinning him in two innings. He gave the home run a second hardening of the game, and he couldn’t survive the second inning.
“I want this ball,” Gonsolin said. “I want to get out there and give my team a chance to win whenever I go out. I’m just trying to take it as a learning experience. ”
To judge the performance of the pitchers, and to be extended by the operation of the Dodgers, is a little inappropriate, throwing every pot into the postseason.
“I still believe in them,” Roberts said. “I still believe in them. They just have to make the pitch. “
Roberts said Buhler will launch Game 3, Julio Ureas Game 4 and Kershaw Game 5.
Roberts will not refuse to use Alex Wood as a starter, which means Gonsolin and Meno can be used outside of their usual roles in the rest of the World Series. His role is “out-gator” and the rest time in that role is getting shorter.
