When someone uses the word “hot rod,” they are probably talking about the 1932 Ford McMullen Roadster, whether they know it or not. From the classic open silhouette to its iconic and heavily copied flamed paint job, the vehicle epitomizes everything we expect from the American hot rod. Now, the most responsible car of the genre, and without a doubt the most visible rod of all time, is for sale.
Later this week, Mecum Auctions will put the eye-catching classic car up for sale as part of its Indy 2020 sales event. The vehicle will be part of the Mecum Gallery Exposition sale and is sure to reach exponentially more than the $ 5,000 it sold in 1970.
The 1932 Model A on which the roadster is based was first purchased by its namesake, the late car enthusiast Tom McMullen, in 1958. And in true hot rodder fashion, it immediately started its 283-inch V8. Cubic and replaced it with a modified heavy Chevy V8 352ci with a six-barrel carburetor design. But McMullen did not stop there. He would continue to modify the engine configuration during his twelve years with the car. He would eventually add a GMC 4:71 supercharger with a dual four-barrel carb and an aluminum Moon Eyes fuel tank before selling it to help finance his business interests, which included a burgeoning publishing empire.
As impressive as the vehicle’s powertrain may be, at one point the car was the fastest street bar in the world thanks to its top speed of 167 mph, the McMullen roadster is primarily known for its bad looks. McMullen had his roof cut, his curved fenders removed, and his driving posture lowered. But the most notable modification is the yellow and red flames that were painted on the front of the car. Those curling flames, which were the work of American artist and cartoonist Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, and some subtle streaks by McMullen himself are why this car has been featured on countless album and magazine covers throughout the years. years. The car was also part of the inaugural Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Hot Rod class in 2007.
The 1932 Ford McMullen Roadster will be available for purchase July 10-18 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. It is one of 18 “investment grade” vehicles included in the Mecum Gallery Exposition sale. Each vehicle can be purchased directly from the auction house and will not go up to bid. No pricing information was provided, though you should expect to spend a penny to get this classic.
