Xbox boss explains why the PS5 has such a crazy design – BGR

  • Xbox boss Phil Spencer went on a rampage Animal Crossing talk show to talk about the Xbox Series X.
  • When asked about the design of the PS5, Spencer explained some of the challenges facing both Sony and Microsoft towards a new console generation.
  • Spencer said one of the most difficult challenges was figuring out how to keep the console cool.

The biggest surprise of Sony’s Future of Gaming event back in June was the unveiling of the PS5. Rumors from reliable sources prior to the show suggested that Sony was waiting to see the design of its next-generation console, but instead we had to see both the standard PS5 and the Digital Edition which will be shipped without a disc. Unsurprisingly, everyone wanted to talk about the design, which is unique – to say the least – but Sony has never explained why the PS5 looks like that. That Xbox Player Phil Spencer did it for her this week.

Screenwriter and author Gary Whitta began a talk show that takes place entirely within the world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons called Animal Talking, and on Thursday, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer joined the show to discuss a bunch of topics, including the designs of the two next-gen consoles launching this holiday season. At one point, Whitta even asked Spencer what he thought when he first saw the design of the PS5.

“Well, it’s tricky, because I know the physics that we’re both dealing with the power of these consoles, and cooling these consoles – the power, the energy consumption, the cooling – these are real challenges of this generation, to “We’re talking about consoles that are now, on the CPU and GPU side, real, powerful computers,” he said. “In principle, both companies had to balance form and function more than this generation.

“We chose our design because we wanted a size of that we could spin a little slower so we didn’t make any noise,” Spencer added regarding the Xbox Series X. “We wanted to have a very quiet console. So we built a shape-following function design with our console, so we could draw a lot of air with a fan size that rotates a little slower, so we didn’t get such high-pitched sounds that consoles can sometimes make. ”

“Know that the PlayStation 5 is running at higher clocks […] it creates unique design challenges in how to keep these things cool, ”said Spencer. “It simply came to our notice then. They took an approach that is different from the approach we took [with Xbox Series X]. I’ve not run a PlayStation 5, but I’m sure they had similar design objectives to themselves as to what it means to spin, how it sounds and how much power it draws, because those are things we’ve focused on and it led to the design we have. ”

Spencer also notes that he will end up selling a PS5, and he’s excited to see how it performs.

Sony will inevitably have more to say about the design and performance of the PS5, especially with the release date just around the corner, but it’s interesting to hear the head of a competing platform explain some of the challenges that went on when designing game consoles for 2020 You can watch the full interview below:
