Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio met at Extreme Rules in an ‘Eye for an Eye’ match.
The stipulation meant that a winner was only decided when they had “ripped out their opponent’s eye.”
Sounds pretty awful, doesn’t it?
Well, the end of the match has been criticized by fans because it seemed very silly.
Mysterio pulled out a fake eyeball and used some fake blood while Rollins threw up next to him in the ring.
Rey’s injury is clearly untrue, but there have been many occasions when WWE stars have been seriously injured while acting.
With that in mind, GIVEMESPORT has decided to look back at some of the most horrifying injuries wrestling has ever seen.
John Cena’s broken nose and broken pec
The 16-time world champion has had a fair amount of injuries. In 2007, he suffered a pectoral tear while trying to launch Kennedy.
Cena’s muscle injury was clearly visible as he squeezed his pec. He missed months of action due to the problem, but it wasn’t the only time he was hurt in the ring.
Fast forward to 2015 and broke his nose against Seth Rollins. The architect caught him with one knee and smashed Cena’s face.
Fortunately, it wasn’t a serious injury, and unbelievably, John returned after just a week off. However, the photos are pretty crazy.
Cold Stone Neck Steve Austin
One of WWE’s most famous injuries occurred at SummerSlam in 1997, when Stone Cold nearly broke his neck.
Austin took a reverse drive from Owen Hart who buried his head in the mat. Since then he remembered not being able to feel anything from the neck down and thinking that he would be paralyzed for life.
Unbelievably, the rattlesnake finished the match and won, but spent much of his career after struggling with severe pain, in part because he rushed back so quickly.
Mick Foley’s broken body
Seriously, what didn’t Foley hurt during his WWE career? The toughest man in wrestling was famous for putting his body on the line.
His most famous injuries occurred against The Undertaker in King of the Ring in 1998. As we all know, Foley was thrown from the top of the cell and even fell just in case.
That night, he suffered a concussion, injured his kidney, and dislocated his jaw and shoulder. You could even see one of her teeth hanging from her nose afterwards.
The eye of the gravedigger
Ah, a real eye injury. Fake accessories were not used with this one. In 1995, The Undertaker suffered an orbital bone fracture in a match with Mabel.
Fortunately, the incident did not affect his vision and he did not lose an eye, unlike Mysterio.
He soon returned to action with a Phantom of the Opera-style mask.
Randy Orton’s Broken Clavicle
During a game with Triple H in 2008, Orton was thrown onto the top rope, landed uncomfortably, and broke his clavicle.
Despite the injury, The Viper continued to fight, and commenters even referenced his broken collarbone.
However, it was all in vain as Triple H retained his championship and Orton spent the next five months on the shelf.
Nikki Bella’s neck and brain problems
Nikki was forced to retire in 2019 after suffering a series of serious injuries throughout her career.
The biggest problem was a herniated disc behind his vertebrae, more commonly known as a neck fracture, as well as a cyst on his brain.
“Herniated the top disc where I had surgery, I have all this swelling around the metal and then I have a cyst in my brain,” Nikki revealed last year.
“So they said, ‘You’re done, no more, you’re gone.’ So I had no choice, which sucks.”
The ones listed above are just a select number of serious injuries we’ve seen in WWE over the years.
We could have included people like Paige, Shawn Michaels or Big Show too; All of those artists also had infamous problems.
While Rey Mysterio’s eye injury is false, it’s important to remember that many stars have suffered real-life injuries in the square circle.
Whether it’s a broken nose, a broken clavicle, or a broken neck, every time you suffer a serious injury, the right precautions must be followed.
Some stars, such as Orton and Cena, continued to fight in their matches even after hurting themselves.
Others were not so lucky and were forced to retire early.
There’s a reason WWE discourages viewers from trying something at home. Always remember, wrestling can be dangerous.
