With Disney’s opinion and the last dragon, I think I saw

Rye and The Last Dragon At least for me, it’s a lot more than the latest Disney flick. Admittedly, I’m not a big fan of Disney either. But for some reason Rai, I have a little girl who seems to have finally seen.

Growing up in America, I rarely saw Asians in movies or television. And if I did, they were barely brown and Southeast Asian like me. In the end, that is changing.

Ryan is voiced by Kelly Marie Tran, an American from Vietnam. The film is inspired by various Southeast Asian cultures. The screenplay was written by Qin Nguyen and Adele Lim, both of whom trace their origins to Southeast Asia. This is one reason why there are so many quiet cultural Easter eggs to discover in this movie. The name Raya means “celebration” in Malay. She rode around on a sidekick of an animal called “Tuk Tuk”, which she shares with the name Cambodia’s iconic motorbike-powered vehicle (which you’ll find similar sets of wheels in many parts of Southeast Asia).

A teaser that made me almost cry (and I’m not a crawler), Rhea Filipino looked like a weapon used in martial arts – bamboo arnis sticks. His sword is reminiscent of Indonesian Krishna. The film’s epic battle scenes also draw from the fighting styles of Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

If he’s too unfamiliar to you, I don’t blame you. I was born in the Philippines and I grew up in the US. I didn’t even learn about Arnis until I was in college. When you don’t see yourself reflected in the world around you, you lose a lot. That’s why it makes so much sense to watch Rai, Brown and Badas, wield the same weapons that my ancestors did to fight.

Overall, Asian Americans have already been featured in the media – but Southeast Asians are often overlooked. “Asian American” is a formidable umbrella that encompasses many peoples, cultures and languages. Putting everyone in a group can obscure that diversity. Worse, they can make some communities and inequalities disappear.

This is a problem often referred to as the lack of “collected data” for the Asian American and Pacific Islander umbrella group. There is not always enough data stored on how experiences are broken down into groups. For example, many Southeast Asians fled to the U.S. as refugees after the Vietnam War or the Cambodian genocide. Came – and they can tell their migration stories, and the resources they can access to America, are very different from those who migrated.

During his “Secret War” in Lamos, U.S. Poverty among Hemingway Americans, many of whom came to the U.S. as refugees, is twice as high after cooperating with – 26 percent – in the entire Asian American community. That kind of data is needed to dispel the Asian model minority myth, a stereotype that hurts all Asian Americans because it incorrectly assumes that our communities already have access to all the resources we need.

If you’ve seen it Rai Or just its trailers, then you know how the movie is about bringing communities together. Disgracing data about dividing someone is not. To bring devotees together, you have to be first See Each other.

In Rye and The Last Dragon, We find his characters facing difficulties that fit into the modern history of Southeast Asia: war, loss, hunger, and a long search for healing. The leading characters form a kind of mixed family of refugees who are building a new world one after the other, losing almost everything in each of the following.

I’m not saying movie and its portrayal is perfect. It’s, after all, a real-life Disney-feed version. The movie still blends all the different cultures of Southeast Asia into a single fantasy world, and Disney has been criticized in the past for creating a monolithic culture in movies like Muana and Mulan which are again the “overall” aspects of different people. Rai Probably will face a full investigation, in part, due to the pressure to represent a large group of people, whose stories have not been told mostly in the mainstream media. I’m already feeling the pressure of writing this post, knowing there are things I would fail to see.

But in this case, I would argue that there should be no story at all. Hopefully, it will open up space for more story to come to the surface.
