You have planned a trip to Walt Disney World with the insight of sunny Orlando. Even though at the moment many, many things will be different, one thing you probably do not expect is the power to go out when you usually wait to ride on Space Mountain. But as a storm last summer demonstrated, incoming weather could even hit a Magic Kingdom.
What happened?
Despite the loss of power to many residents of northeastern states, Hurricane Isaias, which struck in early August 2020, did not cause a power outage at Disney World. The storm devastated only the east coast of Florida. But last summer, Disney World experienced a rare power outage in late August. Probably as a result of Tropical Storm Dorian, much of the Disney Springs shopping area fell into darkness. Some emergency lights came on, but the neighborhood as a whole was terribly dark. Some Disney Resorts also lost power, and many Magic Kingdom rides stopped running. The execution, however, took about half an hour.
Does it happen often?
In general, power outages at Disney are rare. But why? Essentially because Disney is more built as a city center than a neighborhood. Its infrastructure is industrial. This means that no fragile power lines hang in places where one falling tree can take out the power for an entire block.
