Why a valid coronavirus vaccine cannot eradicate the epidemic quickly

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk warned you.

In May, when the stock of the electric vehicle was less than half of its current value (adjusted for splitting), Musk famously tweeted that his company had been overvalued. Investors finally shared that vote on Tuesday when the stock fell 21 percent after the S&P Dow Jones index did not approve of Tesla TSLA.

Time probably came out of the blue, especially for the technology sector, the real decline can be explained as an improvement in irrational ecstasy.

But one reason the market is changing, at least until September, was the work of multiple companies on the coronavirus vaccine. Evercore ISI hosted a call on the subject, and it was fast.

Speaking ahead of the news that AstraZeneca has suspended its COVID-19 trial due to an illness, analyst Josh Schmeier said that in most vaccines, pharmaceutical companies settle for lower rates of immunity in exchange for better tolerance. Now, he said, companies are pushing a defensive profile for maximum impact, knowing it could come with more side effects. He put more than 50/50 odds that the first vaccine would work well – which he defined as a 90% reduction in event rates, or a strong benefit in severe cases.

The vaccine, which many investors see as their favorite, according to Schmeier, is expected to complete its Phase 3 in December.

But the next possible scenario is that it works, but not as great as the flu vaccine, in this case, the effect on eradicating the epidemic will be limited. “I don’t know if the 60% effectiveness COVID vaccine gets us out of this mess quickly,” he said. (Minimum effectiveness is 50%). In that scenario, the hope would be that the second wave of vaccines would work better, “Switch the vaccine horses to the mainstream if better come along.”

He added that the vaccine does not work, or worsens the infection, or is less likely to cause problematic side effects.

More positively, analyst Vijay Kumar said the newly approved rapid, point-of-care antigen tests would help reopen the economy and remove testing barriers. He said that in the first part of next year, anyone who wants to take the exam can take the test.
