WHO warns that coronavirus pandemic may “get worse and worse”

As coronavirus cases reached record levels over the weekend and deaths rose in most U.S. states, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned Monday that the pandemic is worsening and that “It will not return to normal in the foreseeable future.”

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that while several countries in Europe and Asia have been able to control the outbreaks, there is much to worry about if leaders do not take the necessary steps to curb the transmission of the virus.

“In several countries around the world, we are now seeing dangerous increases in COVID-19 cases, and hospital wards are filling up again. It would appear that many countries are losing profits because proven measures to reduce risk are not implemented or followed, “Tedros said during a virtual presentation. Press conference in Geneva on Monday.

Let me be frank, too many countries are heading in the wrong direction. The virus remains the number one public enemy, ”said Tedros. “If the basic concepts are not followed, the only way this pandemic will unfold. It’s going to get worse and worse and worse. ”

However, Tedros said there is a roadmap to a “situation where we can control the disease and get on with our lives.”

“We need to reach a sustainable situation in which we have adequate control of this virus without completely closing our lives, or turning from one confinement to another,” he said.

Tedros said that to get here you need to focus on reducing mortality and suppressing transmission, an empowered and committed community that takes individual steps to protect the community and strong government leadership and communication.

The WHO reported more than 230,000 infections worldwide on Sunday, setting a record for new infections reported in one day.

Tedros said that almost 80 percent of those cases were reported from just 10 countries, and 50 percent from just two countries. Both the United States and Brazil lead the world in the number of cases and deaths.

Tedros criticized political leaders, without naming any specifically, saying that “mixed messages” from the leaders are “undermining the most critical ingredient of any response: trust.”

WHO has been criticized by the Trump Administration for their management of the early coronavirus outbreak and suspected bias towards China. Last week, the White House submitted its withdrawal notice to leave the health agency to the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). Tedros said the WHO had received no formal notification of the U.S. withdrawal.

Nearly 13 million cases of coronaviruses have been reported worldwide with more than 570,000 deaths. The United States leads the world with more than 3.3 million cases and more than 135,000 deaths.
