WHO stops hydroxychloroquine trials after failing to reduce death

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Saturday that it will suspend its trials of the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine and HIV treatment lopinavir / ritonavir in hospitalized patients with the coronavirus after the results showed that the drugs did not reduce rates. of mortality.

“These interim trial results show that hydroxychloroquine and lopinavir / ritonavir produce little or no reduction in inpatient mortality with COVID-19 compared to standard care. Investigators of solidarity trials will discontinue trials with immediate effect.” The WHO said in a statement, referring to trials from various countries it is conducting.

The group, a United Nations agency, said it was completing the tests on the recommendation of the international steering committee for the drug trial. The pause does not affect other studies in which the drugs are used for patients who are not hospitalized.

The WHO is also examining the potential effect of remdesivir, an antiviral drug from Gilead, on COVID-19.

The WHO announcement comes two days after the publication of a study linking the use of hydroxychloroquine by patients with COVID-19 to reduce mortality rates.

In patients who received the drug, the death rate was 13 percent compared to a death rate of 26.4 percent in patients who did not receive the treatment.

Studies have offered in scattershot the evaluation of the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine in the fight against the coronavirus. The Food and Drug Administration earlier this year withdrew the authorization for emergency use of the drug, citing data from a large randomized controlled trial that showed no difference between the use of hydroxychloroquine and standard COVID-19 treatment.
