General Motors is calling its next GMC Hummer EV “The World’s First Supertruck” and on paper, it looks like it could be.
The battery-powered SUV, which the company has sparked with dark images, will be offered as a pickup truck or SUV and will be assisted by GM’s hands-free Super Cruise driver, a 350 kW load capacity that beats Tesla and a model with 1,000 hp that can accelerate to 60 mph in three seconds.
It also has an adrenaline mode, which probably accompanies its peak performance, but also something called a crab mode that is more of a mystery.
GMC has not explained at all what it is. Ford demonstrated the front trunk, or “frunk” of its electric Mustang Mach-E by filling it with shrimp, but while the Hummer EV also has the so-called “frunk,” we’re pretty sure Crab Mode is something completely different.

A track may come from a military truck called Scarabée designed by the Volvo Group-owned military vehicle manufacturer Arquus.
The light armored vehicle features four-wheel steering that allows it to move diagonally when everyone is pointing in the same direction, in what the company refers to as a “crab” movement, although it is unable to go perfectly sideways.
Aiming the front and rear wheels in opposite directions allows the giant to make tighter turns than would be possible with a conventional setup. While primarily intended to aid Scarabée maneuvers in tactical situations, both features can come in handy on narrow off-road trails, not to mention while parking.
GMC has not confirmed that the Hummer EV will have rear steering capability, but it would not be the first for the brand. From 2002 to 2005, the GMC Sierra pickup was available with an option called Quadrasteer that could not ‘crank’, but allowed the full-size pickup to turn as sharply as a Saturn coupe.
Rivian Electric Truck Company’s starter truck uses four electric motors that allow it to perform a “tank turn” instead of feeding them in opposite directions, but it cannot move sideways … as far as we know.
More details on the GMC Hummer EV will be released in the coming months before its full disclosure sometime this fall, when order books for deliveries scheduled to begin in late 2021 open. However, one thing is for sure: GMC’s “supertruck” You should have no problem transporting a wad of crabs home from the fish market.
Whether in bed or in the frunk.
