Werner Herzog, Regina King, Mira Nair – Deadline

The Toronto Film Festival (Sept. 10-19) revealed the lineup for its 2020 hybrid edition, which had to be shortened due to the impact of the coronavirus.

Joining the films previously announced for the festival are new projects by artists like Werner Herzog, Regina King, Francois Ozon and Naomi Kawase. Mira Nair’s BBC-Netflix television series A suitable boy It has been established as the closing night of the festival. Scroll down for the full list.

As revealed earlier this month, the slimmed festival will open with Spike Lee’s concert film version of the David Byrne show American Utopia. Previously announced films for Sundance and Venice that are also heading to Toronto include those by Viggo Mortensen. Like Venice earlier this week, Toronto has put together a healthy global offering in context, even if it looks lighter than usual at the likely Oscar fare in America, as studios continue to delay films on middle of the pandemic. Also in tune with Venice, the North American showcase is approaching gender parity among its selection with 46% of films directed or co-directed by women, an increase of 36% last year.

Toronto films will be played during the first five days of the event as physical, socially distanced projections, as long as the festival doesn’t have to change course due to unexpected outbreaks of coronavirus. Large gatherings are not yet allowed in Toronto, but starting this Friday the city must reopen theaters and resume Indoor service in bars and restaurants. Indoor pickup sizes may increase to 50.

Despite the slowdown in closing, the festival has said that few international and industry press are expected to attend the festival in person, with screenings and market deals also taking place online.

“We started this year planning a 45th Festival much like our previous editions,” said Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director and Co-Director of TIFF, “but along the way we had to rethink almost everything.” This year’s lineup reflects that tumult. The names you already know are doing new things this year, and there are a whole host of new and exciting names to discover. We are grateful to all the filmmakers and companies that joined us on this adventure, and we are eager to share these brilliant films with our audience. “

“TIFF 2020 is a special edition and symbolizes what is possible when collaboration, ingenuity and passion take center stage,” said Joana Vicente, TIFF Executive Director and Co-Director. “It is also a time for us to celebrate and affirm some of TIFF’s founding values, including the power film that has to propel us as a society and present a diversity of voices. I am proud and excited to share these films with the public. “

The festival added: “The films on offer will reflect world-class Canadian cinema, documentaries and creativity. The strong representation of women, blacks, indigenous people and people of color in the TIFF selection reflects the organization’s continued commitment to normalize gender parity and racial equality for future generations. “
