Well-known evangelical writer and educator Beth Moore says he is no longer a Southern Baptist, following criticism of sexism in the church and condemnation of “Trumpism.”
“I’m still a Baptist, but from now on I can’t identify with Southern Baptists,” Moore, founder of Living Proof Ministries, told the Religion News Service in an interview published Tuesday.
“I like a lot of Southern Baptist people, a lot of Southern Baptist churches, but I don’t recognize some of our heritage things that haven’t lived in the past.”
Living Proof Ministries, founded by Moore in 1994, guides women who seek to exemplify the evangelical principles of their lives.
Moore, based in Houston, has spoken out against sexuality and misconduct inside and outside the church. She has Public That she is among the many women who have been sexually abused and tortured, and she has said that “we are fed up with it.”
In 2016, after releasing Donald Trump’s “Access Hollywood” recording, Moore called on people to “wake up”.
December, he Tweeted: “I’ve never seen anything like this in the United States. I found it more surprisingly tempting and dangerous for God’s saints than Trumpism. This Christian nationalism is not God’s. Get back from it.”
In a 2018 blog post titled “A Letter to My Brothers”, Moore described her experience as a female leader in the rhetorical evangelical world and learned to show a “Christian attitude”, dealing with her disrespect and dismissal and the attitude between key Christians. Leaders who “hit because of women’s abuse, offensive and surprisingly frustrating.”
Moore, 63, has had to respond to comments. She told the Religion News Service that she was not welcome at the 2019 Southern Baptist Convention, where she spoke at a panel on abuse, and that things have gotten worse since then.
Moore also told the outlet that she had terminated her publishing contract with Life Way, although she would still distribute her books.
Representatives from the Tennessee-based organization Nashville did not immediately respond to an email request for comment Tuesday night.
Southern Baptist is the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. The convention has a total membership of 14.5 million in its most recent annual report.
