Earlier today, Princess Beatriz and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi surprised the world by getting married in a secret and private ceremony. The couple also chose a novel location for their unexpected wedding: the Chapel of All Saints at the Royal Lodge.
The informal parish church is located on the grounds of Greater Windsor Park, where Beatrice’s parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, and her sister and brother-in-law, Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, have been isolating themselves during the coronavirus blockade. Princess Eugenie was also married at Windsor, albeit in the much larger and more luxurious St. George’s Chapel.
Unlike St. George’s, the Chapel of All Saints is much more intimate and simple, with a maximum capacity of 180 people (although only around 20 reportedly attended the wedding). The chapel was built in the 1820s in a neo-Gothic style, and it looks quaint and unassuming. While attending most public ceremonies at St. George’s, Queen Elizabeth, Beatrice’s grandmother, regularly uses All Saints for her own worship, for privacy reasons.
Although it may seem relatively simple compared to previous royal wedding palatial churches, the Chapel of All Saints has a rich history for the royal family. The chapel is also known as Queen Victoria Chapel, as Queen Victoria would worship there, and she also commissioned a remodel in the 1860s. The Queen Mother also liked to spend time in the chapel, as the entrance was within walking distance of his home on the Windsor grounds. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, had such affection for the chapel that she was selected to organize her funeral in 2002.
The modest feel of the All Saints’ Chapel coincided with the tone of Beatrice’s wedding, which was postponed and reduced due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of the traditional pomp and fanfare of a normal royal wedding, this small private ceremony only included the happy couple, the Queen and Prince Philip and a close family, and complied with government guidelines for social distancing.
