Although there are no pricing or release dates for any of the consoles, we are fast approaching the arrival of the PS5 and Xbox Series X. But this generation, unlike the last generation, we are going to enter with our eyes open for what will probably end up being a new normal.
While previous generations gave us redesigned and generally “thin” consoles as time went on, the latest generation, after the arrival of PS4 and Xbox One in 2013, got half-generation updates in the form of PS4 Pro in 2016 and Xbox One X in 2017.
Now, it looks like this is probably the new normal, and $ 1,000 worth of video game hardware in 2020 can be supplemented by $ 1000 + of additional hardware in 2023-2024, if schedules are maintained.
There are already a few small hints about this. Sony recently filed a patent for a GPU that talks about “light” and “high-end” hardware versions, which as people who think that PS5 Pro is already in the brain, particularly because Sony is launching with less horsepower than the X series. Meanwhile for Microsoft, if Sony does that, then they will to have to answer, and the “Series” naming convention already implies that we could get a Y or Z Series as an updated model, although for now I called it “X-2” in my title as if it were a Marvel movie.
Xbox Series X
I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t expect new mid-generation update consoles this time. I think both Sony and Microsoft were perfectly satisfied with the adoption and capabilities of Pro and One X, and would see no reason not to do it again in a few years. It remains to be seen if we have that exact schedule again, a PS5 Pro in 2023 and an X-2 Series in 2024, remains to be seen, but we may have the dynamics in which Sony tries to outperform the X Series with an update. power, then Microsoft bites with another update itself. However, things were not like that last time, since Sony came first despite the PS4 having the advantage over the original One, but who knows.
Microsoft appears to be heading beyond the box for this release with the release of Lockhart, a lower The spec console will likely launch alongside the X Series this fall. This contrasts with Sony by simply dividing models between digital and disk-based, so you can alter Apple’s cart in a whole new way. It is now one day until August and Microsoft has yet to say a single public word about Lockhart, despite a release that should be three months away, but I’d be surprised if we go out next month without seeing its debut. And that will generate a lot of new questions.
Obviously, this is something we won’t really have to deal with seriously for a few years, but this time we know for sure that the consoles we buy now will surely not be the best version of those consoles. for the next 6-7 years with mid-generation updates now as one thing.
