Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg has surgery at the end of the season

WASHINGTON – Stephen Strasburg’s season is over.

The Washington Nationals moved the star’s right-hander to the 60-day list of disabled players on Saturday. Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Strasburg will undergo carpal tunnel surgery next week.

Strasburg, last year’s World Series MVP, was first placed on the injured list on August 15 with carpal tunnel neuritis of the right hand.

“Hopefully the operation goes well,” Martinez said. “The biggest thing is that surgery loses everything he has, and he is able to become strong again and return to next spring training. A long-term goal, that’s what we hope for.”

Strasburg, 32, signed a seven-year, $ 245 million contract with Washington throughout the season. He was 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in two starts in 2020. Strasburg was scratched from his first two scheduled starts, and he left his start from Aug. 14 to just two-thirds of an inning.

“He took a shot; apparently it didn’t work,” Martinez said. “He could probably have taken another shot, but we just had to fix it. We don’t want to extend anything.”

The move allowed Washington judge Wil Crowe to add to the 40-man roster. Crowe, a pick in the second round in the 2017 draft, will make his major league debut by kicking off the Nationals Doubleheader’s second game against the Miami Marlins on Saturday.

Crowe will serve as the 29th man from Washington.
