Washington launches first-team merchandise, and there may be clues to the franchise’s future name.

The Washington soccer team recently launched new products that can be purchased through the team’s official website. But that is not the focus of this story. The focus is on possible breadcrumbs that Washington may have left in connection with its future team’s nickname.

A rational person would look at the “evidence” below and say that the chosen text style for each shirt is related to the “W” temporary logo design, which involves serif marks on the top of each “arm” of the letter that points to the left, providing an effect of the letter (and the entire word “Washington”) moving forward. It’s also possible that while these designs are exclusive to Washington now, they will be available to other teams in the coming weeks. We are 99% sure that one of those two things is what is happening here.

But let’s have fun and talk about the other 1% as we review the new merchandise and see what we can find. Starting with this rabbit hole, keep in mind that the team, if they are thinking about their fans, would create team products that could be used beyond this year when the team unveils its new official nickname.

If the “W” logo that the team is temporarily wearing, which appears on several of their new jersey designs and you can see at the bottom right of the image below, is indicative of the planned direction of the new nickname, we might conclude that Washington is considering calling themselves the “Warriors.” The Warriors nickname was reportedly on the table this summer, before the team decided to wait a year before revealing a new nickname.

Much of the new Washington merchandise includes the team’s new ‘W’ logo.

However, note the style of the text “Washington” on the shirt above. See how the dashed white lines start near the bottom of the “W” and rise as they move toward the “N”? It is almost as if that part of the text is “taking off” like an airplane from a runway. The dotted lines (more prominent as the text moves to the right) also evoke the contrails you see coming out of the back of an airplane in the sky.

Why is this important? It’s possible that this style of flying text could mean the team is considering the nickname “Redtails,” which, according to CBS Sports NFL writer Jared Dubin, is “a nod to the planes flown by the Tuskegee Airmen, a totally black fighter squadron. ” and bomber pilots who fought in World War II and were the first black military aviators in the United States Armed Forces. Three of the first five aviators admitted were from Washington, giving the Redtails name a specific connection to the city. ”

The source of “moving forward” is a constant theme in new Washington merchandise.

Taking the theme of flight further, note the swoosh lines that intersect the name “Washington” in our second design above. Could this be another indication that the team is considering integrating flying, in the same way, in the future nickname? The sharp yellow line that begins below the “W” and rises through the “A” also seems to emit the vibe of rising in a sharp plane.

Sure, this font style could be a coincidence. But how much fun would that be? Also, considering the popularity surrounding the Redtails nickname, this could be a harbinger of what’s to come.

Continuing on the subject of flight, the nickname “Redhawks” is another possible option, assuming Washington thinks that way. Redhawks is actually the nickname for the University of Miami in Ohio. Like Washington, Miami had to withdraw its old nickname before changing its name.

Do the sharper lines in this design point in a different direction?

You see more trail-like effects embedded in the text on the shirt above, but the sharper points that emerge from the text are more in line with something like the vibe of the Los Angeles Chargers. We know that name is out, but could they be looking for another type of off-radar electricity nickname like the “Washington Bolts” or “Washington Shockers”? In the end, it’s probably too close to the Chargers’ name, so we can probably dismiss this idea.

However, is there any clue to choose “WAS” for the top shirt? There really isn’t an apparent nickname option that starts with those three letters, but if you consider them as WA, that could set a name like “Washington Admirals” or “Washington Arrows” or anything else that starts with that. lyrics.

What we do know is that we have to wait at least one football season before Washington discovers its new nickname. Until then, we can try to continue, try to read the tea leaves. But depending on the complexity of this exercise, we can leave the work of real detective to the professionals.
