Walmart to convert 160 store parking lots into movie theaters

Walmart is transforming 160 of its store parking lots nationwide into movie theaters as of August, as many theaters remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The block store giant is partnering with Tribeca Enterprises for the effort.

“Drive-Ins has been an exclusive program for Tribeca since we started the Tribeca Film Festival 19 years ago after September 11,” said Jane Rosenthal, CEO and co-founder of Tribeca Enterprises and Tribeca Film Festival in a statement on Wednesday.

“But now, Tribeca Drive-In is much more than just a fun, retro way of watching movies – it’s one of the safest ways for communities to get together. We’re thrilled to partner with Walmart to bring more people together around the world. shared cinematic experiences. ” that Tribeca is known. “

The move comes when several summer movies, including live action “Mulan” and the upcoming James Bond installment, “No Time to Die” have delayed their release date due to concerns from COVID-19.

Cinemark cinemas announced in late June that the company would open its cinemas in late July. The announcement came as the United States is experiencing an increase in coronavirus cases in large southern and southwestern states such as Georgia, Florida, Texas, and Arizona.

Walmart drive-ins will begin in August and run through October.

Walmart also announced Camp by Walmart, a free virtual kids’ summer camp featuring stars and celebrities like Neil Patrick Harris, LeBron James, Idina Menzel, and Drew Barrymore.

“Summer hasn’t felt like summer yet, and I know I hear every day, ‘Mom, I’m bored!'” Janey Whiteside, Walmart’s director of customer service, said in the statement.

“Through our digital media and large store presence, we hope to bring summer fun to families across the country.
