VW begins ID.4 electric SUV production

VW announced today that it has begun production of its new ID.4 electric SUV at its Zwickau plant in Germany.

Zwickau is the first Volkswagen factory to be completely converted into electric car production.

It is now set to produce exclusive cars with its MEB platform, the German automaker’s electric car platform that supports its next generation of electric cars.

They started the production of the ID.3 at the plant last year and now they are starting the official production of the ID.4 today.

Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, announced:

With the ID.4, Volkswagen is adding an electric car to its offering in the compact SUV class, the largest growth segment in the world. After ID.3, this is already the second model based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). Going forward, the car will be built and sold in Europe, in China, and later also in the US. That’s how we scale the MEB platform globally and lay the economic foundations for the success of our ID. family. “

Volkswagen’s board member for E-mobility, Thomas Ulbrich, added:

“We are directly on schedule with the transformation process of the Volkswagen brand to e-mobility. The ID.3 is now followed by the ID.4. Given the great social challenges of the past months, the successful launch of the production of the ID.4 series is an exceptional achievement, so my appreciation and thanks go mainly to the Volkswagen team in Saxony and all members of the ID team. The second model in the ID. family is already running away from the assembly line, where ICEs were only recently built. “

Now between ID.3 and ID.4, Volkswagen has plans to build 300,000 electric cars at the factory in Zwickau by 2021.

For the ID.4, it will just be one of many production facilities.

Pre-production of the ID.4 has already begun at the Anting factory in China and as we reported earlier, VW is on track to start production of the ID.4 at the Chattanooga factory in the US in 2022.

VW today revealed a few more details about the ID.4:

The ID.4 is based on Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB). This is an all-electric platform that maximizes the opportunities offered by e-mobility. With its low drag coefficient of 0.28 and scalable battery system, the ID.4 can cover more than 500 kilometers (up to WLTP). The car also offers a lot of interior space, and the powerful proportions give the exterior an ultra-modern look. ”

The automaker also confirmed that the all-wheel-drive version of the car is coming to the 2-wheel-drive, which will be the only option at launch.

VW plans to unveil the production version of the electric SUV next month.
