According to the Daily Mail, the SARS-CoV-2 virus generally binds to ACE-2 receptors, known as the “doors” of cells within the human body. These receptors are often found in the airways, lungs, and some other organs.
And a research team at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the United States found that many ACE-2 receptors are produced in the eye, making them a “target” for viruses.
This means that if the drops from a person infected with Covid-19 enter the eyes of a healthy person, the SARS-CoV-2 virus can enter the cells there. This explains conjunctivitis (red eye and infection) in patients with Covid-19 infection. Scientists say that tears can also transmit the virus.
The team was chaired by Lingli Zhou, a scientist who works in the Department of Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. They analyzed 10 eyes of non-Covid-19 death victims to study the ACE2 receptor.
ACE-2 is believed to be the entry point for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The spikes on the surface of the virus bind to the receptors and therefore invade the cells and copy. Research shows that a person with multiple ACE-2 receptors is more likely to have more viruses enter the bloodstream.

Scientists also tested for the existence of TMPRSS2, an enzyme that helps the virus invade after spikes in viral proteins bind to ACE-2. According to the study, ACE-2 and TMPRSS2 must appear in the same cell for the virus to replicate in large numbers.
All eye samples produce ACE-2 in the conjunctiva, cornea (black eye of the eye), or eyeballs on the edge of the cornea. TMPRSS2 also appears in eye samples, according to a review of the study published in MedRxiv.
“All of these results indicate that cells on the surface of the eye, including the conjunctiva, are highly susceptible to the SARS-CoV-2 virus and have since acted as an invasive gate,” said Dr. Zhou and colleagues. Enter “as well as the reservoir, spread the disease from person to person.”
The study was inspired by “popular speculation” that the eye is where the virus can enter. One study recorded that 30% of Covid-19 infected patients had symptoms of conjunctivitis. Researchers think this is a secondary complication when the virus passes from the respiratory system to the eye. But it could also be a direct result of the virus that attacks eye cells in the first place by binding to ACE-2 receptors.
“This shows the importance of safety measures, including masks and eye contact prevention measures,” concluded Dr. Zhou.
Doctors on the frontline of the anti-epidemic Covid-19 often wear goggles or a spray protection mask to protect their eyes.
The SARS-CoV-2 virus can be transmitted through the eyes, experts warned since January 1, 2020 when a new outbreak occurred in China.
The Ministry of Health recommends isolation, health surveillance in the prevention of COVID-19: – For close contacts of patients with positive COVID-19: Isolate at the medical center within 14 days and take samples for analysis. – For close contact with COVID-19 positive patients: Quarantine, monitor health at home, place of residence, residence within 14 days and notify local authorities (neighborhoods, communes, cities) and must closely monitor the health situation. If fever, cough, sneeze, runny nose, fatigue, chills, or shortness of breath are found, immediately isolate at the medical facility and take patient samples for testing. – Wear a mask frequently, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. – Wash your hands with soap continuously to avoid the risk of spreading the disease to other people. – Share your own travel schedule with medical staff. – Call the information hotline immediately: 19003228 and 19009095. |
