India’s top government officials are considering building a large hydroelectric dam in a remote state bordering China in response to the massive construction of the Beijing Dam on the strategically located Yarlung Tsangpo River. (India is called Brahmaputra).

The construction of the dam in India will inevitably face Chinese opposition. However, India believes that if China is allowed to build a dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo / Brahmaputra river without intervening, many natural disasters can occur.
The Yarlung Tsangpo / Brahmaputra River flows from Tibet, China, to the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, followed by Bangladesh.
The Indian government said that China implemented a series of dam construction projects on the Yarlung Tsangpo / Brahmaputra River, which would cause India to suffer from flash floods and severe drought.
“We need a large dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo / Brahmaputra river to limit the negative influence of the Chinese dams. The highest levels of government are considering and will soon make a decision, ”said Mehra, a senior official in India’s Ministry of Water Resources.
According to Mr. Mehra, the Indian hydroelectric project built on the Yarlung Tsangpo / Brahmaputra River is expected to have a capacity of 10 gigawatts.
“We want a dam that stores a lot of water to limit the negative impact of China’s dams,” Mehra said.
According to experts, the construction of the Indian dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo / Brahmaputra River could enrage China and increase border tensions.

“We told China that no project should have a negative impact on India. They got engaged to us. However, it is not clear how long this commitment will last, “said Mr. Mehra with concern.
Yan Zhiyong, chairman of the China Power Construction Group (FPF), said the plan to build a series of dams on the Yarlung Tsangpo / Brahmaputra River is a “historic opportunity.”
According to India Today, India needs to build dams on the Yarlung Tsangpo / Brahmaputra rivers because China often uses water as a “strategic weapon” to pressure it.
In mid-June clashes in the Galwan Valley, Chinese soldiers blocked the flow of the Galwan River, Indian newspapers allege.
China shares hydrological data on the Yarlung Tsangpo / Brahmaputra rivers with Bangladesh, but refuses to do the same with India.
