The Kyrgyz authorities decided to cancel the results of the parliamentary elections after the protest protests spread and turned violent.

According to the BBC, some 5,000 people gathered at Ala-Too Square in the capital city of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on October 5 to express their disapproval of the results of the October 4 elections and demand a new vote. The move comes after only four of the 16 political parties in the Central Asian country have elected representatives in parliament and three-quarters of the winning parties have close ties to President Sooronbai Jeenbekov.

The protests generally unfolded in peace until late at night, when the extremists began to clash with the police, raid the interior of the parliamentary headquarters and set fire to this “White House” building. Angry mobs also attacked other government buildings and released many prisoners, including former President Almazbek Atambayev from prison.

According to the Kyrgyz Ministry of Health, one person died and 700 others were injured in the incident.

Speaking on television on October 6, President Jeenbekov accused “some political forces” of conspiring to take power illegally. Mr. Jeenbekov proposed to initiate a thorough investigation of any electoral violations.

Shortly thereafter, the Kyrgyz Central Election Commission announced the cancellation of the controversial election results and was besieged by accusations of vote buying.
