AmericaJocelyn Yow, 25, was elected mayor of Eastvale, California and became the youngest black mayor in the state.
According to the election results announced on the night of September 12 by the Eastvale City Council, Jocelyn Yow was elected mayor of the city of more than 73,000 residents in Riverside County, California.
“I am very honored and grateful to be Mayor of Eastvale. As the mother of a six-month-old, I have further fueled my desire to contribute to my community,” Yow said.
Yow added that local government is the place to make decisions that affect people’s daily lives and where people can see first-hand how democracy works.
“I am helping the city to ensure a better future for my son and the next generation of Eastvale residents,” said Eastvale’s new mayor.
Jocelyn Yow is the daughter of a family of Vietnamese and Malaysian immigrants. She was elected to the Eastvale City Council in 2018 and served as interim mayor before being elected to the position. Media said Eastvale is a relatively new American city, established in 2010.
Yow graduated from Norco College and the University of California – Berkeley. Yow continues her master’s degree in government at Harvard University, while managing policy at IGNITE, a non-profit organization that promotes women’s positions in politics.
“Mayor Yow is a shining example of what women, especially women of color, can do when given the opportunity to run and win a government job,” said Executive Director Lindsey Nitta. California Women Lead, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the role of women in government, she said.
