On the afternoon of March 23, the Ministry of Health approved the Russian vaccine Sputnik V, which addresses the urgent need for prevention and control of Covid-19 in Vietnam.
Master Phan Cong Chien, Head of Pharmaceutical Sales Department, Vietnam Drug Administration, Ministry of Health, confirmed that the vaccine was approved by the Ministry of Health this afternoon, after about a week of review. The decision to conditionally approve Russia’s Gam-COVID-Vac (another name is Sputnik V), signed by Deputy Health Minister Truong Quoc Cuong on the same day.
Vaccine Sputnik V is prepared in the form of an injectable solution produced and packaged by the Russian company Generium. Each 3 ml vial contains 5 doses. The Center for Research and Production of Vaccines and Medical Biological Products (POLYVAC) is the applicant for approval of this vaccine.
Sputnik V is approved by Vietnam based on the safety, quality and efficiency data provided by POLYVAC to the Ministry of Health as of February 25 and is committed to the accuracy of the documents provided.
Exchange with VnExpressProfessor Dr. Nguyen Dang Hien, director of POLYVAC, said that after the approval decision of the Ministry of Health, the center will work with the Russian side on the supply of vaccines. The last working session between the two parties was 2 months ago. Currently, the Russian manufacturer and the center have no information or comment on the specific plan to supply Sputnik V.
Before that, on February 25, the Advisory Council to issue the drug circulation registration certificate met and agreed to propose to the Ministry of Health the approval of the Sputnik V vaccine.
POLYVAC is responsible for coordinating with the vaccine manufacturing unit to supplement data or other requests related to the Sputnik V vaccine. The Drug Administration will authorize importation of vaccines in accordance with regulations upon receipt of unit records.
The Ministry of Health assigned the Department of Science, Technology and Training of the Ministry to act as the focal point for conducting a clinical evaluation of the safety and immunogenicity of the National Institute of Vaccine and Medical Biological Products Testing Sputnik V. to carry out the inspection. Determination of this vaccine before putting it into use.
Sputnik V is based on vector technology, which uses harmless viruses to introduce the nCoV protein into human cells, helping to stimulate the immune system response.
Sputnik V has been approved for use in more than 50 countries. According to the results of a clinical trial published in The Lancet, the vaccine was 91.6 percent effective, one of only three Covid-19 vaccines in the world that was more than 90 percent effective. As a preliminary result, two doses of Sputnik V were highly effective and responded well to volunteers over 18 years of age.
Last December, Belarus became the first country outside of Russia to approve Sputnik V. In Europe, where the vaccine campaign was slow due to a lack of supply, officials began looking at Sputnik V. On March 4 , the performance of the European Pharmaceutical Products Agency (EMA) product evaluation. In Southeast Asia, the vaccine has been approved in Laos and Myanmar.
Therefore, this is the second Covid-19 vaccine urgently approved by Vietnam. The first Covid-19 vaccine approved by Vietnam was from AstraZeneca. 117,600 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine returned to Vietnam in mid-February, from March 8, deployed in the priority group against Covid-19. To date, more than 36,000 people have been vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine.
On March 16, Russia delivered a batch of 1,000 Sputnik V vaccines to Vietnam on the working trip of the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Patrushev. Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to receive the Covid-19 vaccine today, but it is unclear which of the three Covid-19 vaccines has been approved by Russia.
