The US Department of Justice recently said that it had arrested 2 Malaysian suspects and issued a search warrant for 5 hackers who are citizens and live in China.
A US statement dated September 16 claims that five Chinese hackers have attacked a network involving 100 companies in the United States and abroad.
Interestingly, these hackers are also accused of having infiltrated computer networks belonging to the governments of Vietnam and India.
This group also attacked but was unable to penetrate the UK government network.
Two Malaysian businessmen were arrested on September 14 at the request of the United States for allegedly conspiring with Chinese hackers to profit from attacking American video game companies.
Attacking the Vietnamese government network?
The US Department of Justice indictment says Chinese hackers attacked computer networks belonging to the governments of Vietnam, India and Britain.
They use tools like Acunetix, SQLMap, and Cobalt Strike.
Around September 2018, this group broke into the Vietnamese government’s computers.
In 2019, the group also gained access to Indian government websites and servers.
The group has also been accused by the United States of hacking into the accounts of Hong Kong democracy activists.
In addition, the group of hackers also seeks to attack video game companies, to make money.
At a press conference announcing the indictment, FBI agent James Dawson said: “These criminal activities to generate money are carried out with the tacit consent of the Chinese government.”
According to the accusations, the group of hackers living in China works for a company called Chengdu 404.
According to the technology newspaper Wired, it is possible that China’s Ministry of State Security began using private hacker groups after the 2014 agreement, when the United States and China pledged to stop hacking activities against private companies. .
Adam Meyers from CrowdStrike Company commented: “It is possible for hackers to set up a rental company for the Ministry of Security of China. By taking out the contract, one can make a denial involved.”
The five Chinese hackers have not been arrested by the United States.
The US Department of Justice said the prosecution still sends a tough message to Chinese hackers and Chinese state agencies that the United States will hold them accountable.
