The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use, following the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccines.

“With the availability of two vaccines for the prevention of Covid-19, the FDA has taken another important step in the fight against this global pandemic,” said FDA Director Stephen Hahn on the night of December 18 (tomorrow 19/12 o’clock Hanoi) said.

The move comes a day after the FDA’s advisory board voted to approve the vaccine with 20 votes in favor and no votes.

The approval of Moderna’s vaccine will pave the way for President Donald Trump’s administration to begin distributing 6 million doses of the vaccine in the United States, the country most affected by Covid-19 in the world.

Moderna began developing the Covid-19 vaccine in January, completing the Covid-19 vaccine trial after Pfizer and BioNTech. Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine was developed using informational RNA synthesis technology, with two injections spaced approximately 28 days apart, and does not require storage at extremely low temperatures like Pfizer and BioNTech products.

Both Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are about 95% effective in the general population, while Moderna’s are 86% effective in people over 65 years of age.

Unlike Pfizer, Moderna’s vaccine was developed with significant financial support from the federal government. The Trump administration’s Express Campaign has invested $ 4.1 billion in vaccine development and distribution, while the National Institutes of Health helps conduct clinical trials for the company.

Moderna also contracted directly with the government to manage distribution, so the administration would have more control over logistics than Pfizer. The government contracted McKesson, one of the world’s largest wholesale drug distributors, to distribute vaccines.

The vaccine will be shipped from the manufacturer to McKesson distribution points and then shipped to 64 different jurisdictions for vaccination. That approach contradicts Pfizer, whose vaccine is shipped directly to hospitals and medical centers due to cold storage requirements.

The Trump administration signed an agreement in the summer to provide a total of 100 million doses of Moderna vaccine in the first quarter of 2021. Earlier this month, Express Campaign officials announced that the administration had purchased 100 million of additional doses of Moderna for the second trimester.

With the two vaccines approved, health officials say they plan to give the first enough doses to 20 million people by the end of this year. However, it will take a while before the vaccine is available. Even under perfect conditions, the general population probably won’t be vaccinated until late spring or summer 2021. Until then, health officials warn that the plague in the coming months will be very intense. disastrous.
